For someone who has no experience in filmmaking, Kerry Konrad was able to cast and direct big budget stars, work on a blue/green screen, command, use a lot of computer graphics and technology and well I must say I was impressed with the results. SCATWOT pays homage to the old noir, sci-fi pictures of the past and although some sequences looks sorta obvious there are other shots that is breathtaking making the movie feel at whole again. I'm not really sure what to make of the plot but I admired the relationship between Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow (Sky Captain and Polly Perkins) Angelina Jolie is in a decent role where she doesn't upstage or take over the leading characters parts but is able to adapt well on her own terms. I wish the look of the picture looked more gritty and scratchy as it did when Kerry Conrad showed studios his visual concept to studios when he tried to get financing back in 1998. Overall this picture is not something that wowed me like say Indiana Jones but I have to give credit again to Kerry Conrad for his debut attempt and the fact that he admitted to having no expereience in directing able to direct and do a magnifiscent job nonetheless.

Although the picture feels like a TV picture at times, this is still a good descent film. Anthony Hopkins doesn't look like the man himself but I felt he got Hitchcock's body mannerisms somewhat right and his creepy sexual innnuendo talk Hitchcock was publicly known for. Helen Mirren puts in a fine performance as Hitch's wife Alma who understands that living with someone who is considered famous is not always easy but rather difficult to tolerate. The whole picture is really about Hitch's insecurity and jealous feelings, particularly towards his wife Alma. Then it turns into not a love story but a collaboration piece where husband and wife come together and know what is best for them overall. Completing "Psycho". Pretty annoyed with the dream scenes (Hitch's so called conscience, creepy, haunting male comes into play) because I absolutely felt it was not needed in the picture and I was also hoping this film would have focused more in the production of the movie "Psycho" but instead the film just shows a taste of the actual shooting. It would have been nice to hear Hopkins mentioned a line to Janet Leigh (Scarlett Johansson) or Vera Miles (Jessica Biel) saying "Well you know girls...All breasts sags eventually". I think if the real Hitchcock were alive to hear Hopkins say such words, he probably would have say..."Delightful".

The Mighty Quinn (1989)

I really enjoyed watching "The Mighty Quinn". The picture is very well directed and well casted. Denzel Washington plays a West Indies chief Xavier Quinn (cool name) handling a murder case and is facing a problem since his good friend Maubee (Robert Townsend) may have been involved. Filmmaker Carl Schenkel has a real feel of the Carribean culture, the music and the characters. I admired the small relationship between Washington and Mimi Rogers since they both reminded me of Walter Neff and Phyllis Dietrichson.
"The Mighty Quinn" is one of those great drama thrillers like Arthur Penn's "Night Moves" where you got a very smooth, handsome main character all caught up in a plot that will eventually get in way over his head. In this case it would be Xavier Quinn. For a low budget picture drama, this movie sure puts a badly big budget film to shame.
