David Jenkins, Time Out
Favreau gratifyingly prevents the film from becoming a mere maelstrom of CG effects by pushing the brothers' amusing bickering to the fore...
-
Richard Roeper, Ebert & Roeper
A smart and funny kids' movie that will also keep parents entertained.
-
Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News
Zathura, Jon Favreau's adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg's kid-lit adventure of the same name, more than fills the bill -- though it's unlikely to draw anyone over the age of 11 (not counting baby-sitters).
-
Desson Thomson, Washington Post
Zathura salutes the low-tech magic that lurks inside a board game -- that hidden ability to bring people together.
-
Peter Howell, Toronto Star
In seeking to entertain adults as well as children, director Jon Favreau (Elf) may have overplayed his hand a bit on the grown-up side.
-
Tom Keogh, Seattle Times
Zathura is most interesting and least predictable in its opening scenes -- before the impressive special effects take over.
-
Luke Goodsell, Empire Magazine Australasia
Zathura is a space circus of the surreal that recalls a time when the likes of Joe Dante ruled the pre-adolescent pop sphere.
-
Felix Vasquez Jr., Cinema Crazed
It doesn't talk down its audience, it doesn't paint clichés, it doesn't insult our intelligence, and its entertainment is enjoyable for both adults and children. That's rare.
-
Cynthia Fuchs, Common Sense Media
Sci-fi adventure story for the elementary school set.
-
Kam Williams, Upstage Magazine
A heartwarming family flick which delivers a touching lesson about the true meaning of brotherly love.
-
Jette Kernion, Cinematical
At times it seemed like events were occurring just so the kids, or the kids in the audience, could learn their lesson a little bit more.
-
Kevin Lally, Film Journal International
A lively, imaginative tall tale that should thrill young audiences and engage their parents.
-
Kam Williams, Black Star News
A practically-perfect family flick which delivers a big lesson about the true meaning of brotherly love.
-
James Dyer, Empire Magazine
Charming children's adventure with some superb performances from the young cast.
-
Peter T. Chattaway, Christianity Today
For those who love the majesty of the solar system, the thrill of space battles, and the adventure of finding secret passageways in old houses, this movie should be just the ticket.

Richard Jinman, Sydney Morning Herald
Despite its peculiar name and the fact it bears a strong resemblance to Jumanji -- another film inspired by a book by children's author Van Allsburg -- it's hard not to like Zathura.
-
Todd Jorgenson, Denton Record Chronicle (TX)
Any game is more fun to play than to watch others play, even if it involves death-defying stunts and harrowing alien encounters that would frighten even the heartiest souls.

Jon Favreau, who is responsible of equally bad Iron Man films, is lacking style, originality and capacity of making his film into a entertainment worth to see. Children in this film are very unlikeable. They swear, yell and hate each other and it is extremely hard for viewer to like or care them at all. To make it simple, they are just plain annoying. Why should we in the audience care about these kids? It remains a mystery even when the film ends.
Zathura is film without good director, likeable characters, innovative approach and most of all screenplay that would actually make any sense. This film is so all over the place that after twenty minutes into it i was ready to give up.
Children will possibly forgive it's flaws, but for adult audience this is just painful to sit through. Not only it's a bad film but even worse as a family film, which it is aimed to be. If you want to see better film from the exactly same idea then i advice you to see Jumanji over Zathura.

So the pitch meeting for this one was basically, "Hey, how can we just copy Jumanji, but have even less plot?" There's barely a story here. Brothers fight, then a list of stuff happens as they pull cards, then a happy ending. Lack of imagination, an entire cast of… More
So the pitch meeting for this one was basically, "Hey, how can we just copy Jumanji, but have even less plot?" There's barely a story here. Brothers fight, then a list of stuff happens as they pull cards, then a happy ending. Lack of imagination, an entire cast of unlikeable characters, and some sub-par effects (those creature puppets were horrible) make this a film we won't be watching again anytime soon, if ever.

ZATHURA, based on the childrens' picture book, is quite intense.

I know it was an adaption for the book and for the most part it was a well made adaption, but then it takes a wild turn for the worst. Its not a great movie to me.

The effects were great, the robot was very interesting, The lizards were great, the only problem i have with the movie is how it doesnt follow the book that well, now i understand that you cant make a long movie with a 36 page book, so they had to make up a lot of stuff.

One of the worst family films I've ever seen. It has a heavy depiction of dysfunctional families, bad language used by little kids, and for the record, Jumanji was better.

Kid's movie. Nothing I would like to see. But it was okay.
-
I thought that Zathura is a much better movie that Jumanji, and not just that, but the total result was a much better story and more likable characters!
-
Funny as all get out and fun adventure. Not as good as Jumanji, but holds its own.

What makes Zathura so great, beyond the incredible visual designs, tense challenges, and a great director, is the fact that it was adapted from a Chris Van Allburg book. The Polar Express was a visionary adventure, and Jumanji, family fun. Zathura doesn't get to be as thrilling and masterful as the animated film by Robert Zemeckis, but innovates ingredients from Jumanji, while at the same time creating new ones. It is a movie of great adventure, infinite inventiveness, and a screenplay that will please anyone in the whole family. Jon Favreau has an unlimited supply of audacity and he applies every bit of that to Zathura. Then there's the cast, which features impressive acting from young actors Josh Hutcherson and Jonah Bobo.

We've seen this before - 'should have been called Jumanji II

A kid's movie where a game two brothers are playing becomes life and death.

The question whether or not we needed a Jumanji remake in space is justified, but it's by the same writer and he obviously got away with it, so let's leave that behind us and be open minded. Because everything else about this film is actually really good and likable. It is fast, entertaining, the special effects are good, the actors seem to have fun and infect the audience with it. Children should have a blast with this, adults still young at heart as well. At least if you aren't bothered by the fact that the rules of the game are the same as in Junmanji. But we've been through that. Highlight of the movie are Kristen Stewart's panic attacks. She's gonna be a really big star soon.

looks great and has a nice boys own feel to it,a good follow up but its just not quite there..its missing something, should be more original and special but kinda falls alittle flat.the kids in it are too rough too...they kinda become annoying, need a slap hehe not bad.

First thing I'll mention is that this is from the same author of Jumanji, so it is obvious that this story is the same, just with different characters, setups etc.
Now to the review...I can't really rate the film any higher or lower then a 3, I can't rate it higher because there was nothing new or original in the film that could set it any higher and I can't rate it lower because the film isn't bad. It is an entertaining way to fill 1 hour 30 minutes of your life, it is made for the whole family, with some great special effects and a bit of adult humour here and there for the older crowd. The film is predictable throughout, yet the endings twist was certainly a tad different. Jon Favreau does quite well in his direction, showing that he can work with any actor, no matter what age.
So overall the film is fun, theres nothing overally new here so I can't rate it higher and it isn't a bad film, so I can't rate it lower.

Jumanji in a different touch!
-
Good heck of a wild ride with two squabbling brothers' adventure into the deepest and darkest space. It crosses between Jumanji and The Last Starlighter.
-
Very much the same concept as Jumanji but it takes place in outer space. If you like Jumanji then you'll probably like this movie.
